Many Texans may have seen images on YouTube recently of an Arkansas family law judge striking his older daughter with a belt. A former Texas hand doctor has agreed to pay his estranged wife several hundred thousand dollars as part of the couple's protracted divorce proceedings. As readers of this blog likely know, the breakup of a marriage is often difficult. Few people go into a marriage ever expecting to file for divorce, but the simple reality is that many Texas marriages end that way. Fortunately, not everyone who goes through a divorce has to see the details of the separation reported in national news. Celebrities, however, often have that very experience. Child custody disputes in Texas and elsewhere are not always between parents, and they are not always fair. In a case where policy seems to have trumped reason, a pregnant mother and her husband were taken to jail, while their 2-year-old daughter was taken into custody by the state of Hawaii after the couple failed to pay for two chicken salad sandwiches at a Safeway in late October. They found Safeway and began shopping, but the expectant mother was starving, and the parents picked up and ate two sandwiches as they shopped. They went through the checkout line with the saved wrappers and paid for approximately $50 in groceries, but they forgot to pay for the sandwiches and had no idea such a simple act could be a threat to their child custody rights.

And third, how much is it going to cost each of them financially to untie the knot?
