Messy divorce tarnishing doctor's image

Wednesday, June 20, 2018

A former Texas hand doctor has agreed to pay his estranged wife several hundred thousand dollars as part of the couple's protracted divorce proceedings. Divorce attorneys for the doctor reportedly would not comment on the details of the confidential agreement. As such, it is not entirely clear what the money is for. The doctor's soon-to-be ex-wife is reported to have said that the money represents amounts that her husband owed her.

The contentious divorce proceedings included a protective order against the husband, which he was cited for violating. According to the wife's attorney, the doctor bought a house next to hers so he could keep an eye on her. As a result of the violation, the doctor was given a six-day suspended jail sentence.

In September, the doctor was acquitted of assaulting his wife. The assault was a felony charge because the doctor had pleaded no contest to assaulting a previous wife a few years ago. This is his fourth marriage.

The couple's volatile relationship has garnered some unwelcome attention. The charges and allegations involved have apparently tarnished the Texas doctor's family-friendly image. Rumors of adultery on the part of the wife with a professional athlete have tarnished the family image, as well.

This couple may still have a long road to travel before their divorce will be final, and it may turn out to be a rough journey. The trial in the divorce case won't likely take place until late in 2012. Still hanging in the air are many unresolved issues. One potentially thorny issue concerns who will supervise the couple's visits with their two children.

As with this case, emotions run high during the breakup of a marriage. Many couples point fingers and try to place blame on the other party. When there are allegations of cruel treatment, abuse or adultery, the issues become even more contentious. That's where a Texas divorce lawyer comes in. Attorneys can serve as intermediaries between the spouses, helping to work for a positive outcome that fully resolves all outstanding matters.
