Divorce of prominent couple in Texas heats up over child custody

Sunday, June 24, 2018

A bitter divorce in Texas is heating up between a former hand surgeon and his estranged wife. The couple is now involved in divorce hearings in Houston, and the first day involved child custody complaints from both sides.

The man says that he has not been allowed to see his 8-year-old daughter and 5-year-son as much as he is legally permitted, and he has requested that the court-ordered supervision of his visits with the kids be lifted. The child custody issues between the couple are only one of the many matters that have escalated this divorce into one of the most closely followed marital dissolutions in recent Texas history.

The father has claimed that the supervision of his visits with the children is intimidating them. During the visitations, supervisors and armed guards are around them constantly, which he believes is confusing the children. He also claims his wife has withheld his children from him and wrongfully limited his telephone contact with them.

However, his wife is fully in favor of court-ordered supervision because she says she fears her estranged husband's temper. She claims she was hit by him in a raging outburst in front of the children, and that she has concerns about their safety in his presence.

The husband and wife continue to fling accusations at each other, but a Texas judge will have to decide on the matter of child custody. Although both parties may have had their fair share of personal problems during their marriage, the husband has made no accusation that his wife ever physically abused him. He has claimed, however, that she has a drug problem. Whether the supervision of the husband's visits will continue is anyone's guess, but this couple's divorce battle appears to be far from over.
