Texas parents: Gosselin relieved of child support requirement

Sunday, June 24, 2018

Texas residents likely remember Kate and Jon Gosselin, the reality TV couple made famous by the hit show Kate Plus Eight who later divorced. Their divorce made national headlines and Kate went on to film more episodes of the show on her own and appeared as a contestant on Dancing With the Stars. Jon has not given the appearance of being equally fortunate, given recent statements he allegedly posted online saying that he is having trouble paying his child support for the couple's eight children.

Sometimes child support payments can be difficult to make, especially in such a tough economy. However, if Jon is continuing to make child support payments, it is no longer because he is compelled to do so. Kate's lawyer has made a statement regarding the story, noting that his ex-wife voluntarily relieved him of any required child support obligations almost four months ago.

While this is certainly a surprising turn of events, especially with the headlines this couple has garnered, it appears that Kate's success may be allowing her to care for the children on her own. Relieving him of his child support duties likely took a huge strain off of him. However, the circumstances in this case are not common, for a number of reasons.

Sometimes, one person in the relationship is the main breadwinner and can afford to provide for the couple's children without assistance. In this story, it appears that Kate is confident that she will be able to support her kids without Jon's financial assistance. However, most Texas couples won't be as fortunate as she has been and will need the extra help for their children that child support can provide. Plus, providing for one's children both emotionally and financially is just good co-parenting. Jon Gosselin may have financial woes, but if the statement issued by Kate's lawyer is accurate, they are not due to child support because he has been relieved of any financial responsibility for his children, both current and future.
