Evading child support obligations lands dozens in jail

Monday, July 16, 2018

Parents have a duty to take care of their children even after divorce. As such, court ordered child support payments are not optional. They are carefully calculated to provide children with resources for their basic needs. When a parent does not meet his or her child support obligations, he or she may face serious consequences. Recently, authorities in one Texas county initiated a week-long search to track down parents who owed support.

Working with the Texas Attorney General's office, the Child Support Division located and arrested 36 people who were known to be delinquent in child support payments. Those parents are now looking at up to six months jail time. In addition, people who are more than six months behind may have their drivers' licenses revoked or be turned away when attempting to renew their vehicle registrations. Anyone behind in child support also risks losing any permits for professional or recreational purposes.

The bonds posted for those recently arrested parents will be forwarded to the children who have not received the payments they are due. The Attorney General is firm in his support of the efforts of the CSD. He feels parents have a moral responsibility to provide for their children and that the agency's work in holding parents accountable improves the welfare of children.

Parents in Texas who evade their child support obligations are encouraged to contact the Attorney General's office to make their payments. However, anyone who is experiencing a hardship may be able to have temporary modifications made to their court orders. Parents who are having difficulties with making or receiving child support would do well to discuss their situations with their attorney.
