Know your rights as an active military member.

There are a number of federal laws for military families that may affect you and your family.

• USFSPA: Military personnel and family members often need legal advice on legal benefits under the  Uniformed Services’ Former Spouses’ Protection Act (USFSPA). Knowledge and understanding of USFSPA may make divorce or separation easier. When a marriage ends or when other family legal issues arise, call a military family law firm that understands military regulations and rights. 
• SSCRA: In addition, Congress passed legislation at the start of World War II called the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Act (SSCRA) to provide protection to those called to serve in the Armed Forces. Enacted in 1940, the SSCRA was updated after the 1991 Gulf War. 
• SCRA: The  Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) was written to clarify the language of the SSCRA to reflect new developments in American military life since 1940. The SCRA, signed into law in December 2003, not only protects those on active duty, but also affords protection for Reservists and members of the National Guard (when activated under Title 10, United States Code). The SCRA’s purpose is to enable service members to devote their entire energy to the defense needs of the nation, and to provide for the temporary suspension of judicial and administrative proceedings and transactions that may adversely affect the civil rights of service members during their military service.
